Direct Care Providers Hub
A comprehensive directory of the physicians, nurses, therapists, behavioral health clinicians, and allied health professionals who deliver hands-on patient care within the VA Community Care Network, TRICARE, and CHAMPVA ecosystems.
Clinical & Patient
Treatment Staff
The Direct Care Providers Hub is the clinical counterpart to our Provider Support Professionals Hub — profiling clinicians who have made the commitment to serve veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, and their dependents.
Participating in government payer programs requires maintaining current credentialing across multiple networks, complying with payer-specific documentation standards, and coordinating with VA medical centers and third-party administrators. Our hub organizes direct care talent into five specialized sections.

5 Specialized Sections
Organized by clinical scope from physicians to allied health professionals.

SECTION 1
Physicians & Surgeons
Physicians and surgeons are the clinical decision-makers at the center of patient care. Within the VA CCN, TRICARE, and CHAMPVA networks, these providers serve as the primary point of contact for veterans and military families — from routine wellness exams to complex surgical interventions. Primary care physicians manage longitudinal health relationships, coordinating preventive screenings, chronic disease management, and specialist referrals. Specialist physicians address the service-connected conditions that disproportionately affect veterans: traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal damage, cardiovascular disease, and the full spectrum of mental health disorders. Radiologists, pathologists, and anesthesiologists operate behind the scenes but are equally essential — their diagnostic interpretations and procedural support inform every major clinical decision.

SECTION 2
Advanced Practice Providers & Nursing
Advanced practice providers and nursing professionals form the clinical backbone of healthcare delivery. Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, CRNAs, certified nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists practice with a level of autonomy that makes them indispensable in both primary and specialty care settings. Within VA Community Care and TRICARE networks, APPs frequently serve as the principal provider for routine visits, chronic disease management, and preventive care — extending access where physician availability is limited. Registered nurses, LPNs, and specialized nursing roles execute the clinical protocols that translate physician orders into patient outcomes.
Roles in This Section
- Physical Therapist (PT)
- Occupational Therapist (OT)
- Rehabilitation Counselor
- Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
- Respiratory Therapist (RT)
- Recreation Therapist
SECTION 3
Therapy & Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is one of the highest-demand clinical services in the veteran and military-connected population. Service-related injuries — musculoskeletal trauma, blast injuries, spinal cord damage, traumatic brain injury, and repetitive stress conditions — require sustained therapeutic intervention well beyond acute care. Physical therapists restore mobility, strength, and functional independence. Occupational therapists help patients relearn activities of daily living. Speech-language pathologists address communication and swallowing disorders. Respiratory therapists manage airway conditions and pulmonary rehabilitation for veterans affected by burn pit and toxic exposure. Recreation therapists use activity-based interventions recognized within VA treatment models.

- Psychologist (PsyD/PhD)
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

SECTION 4
Behavioral Health
Mental health is one of the most critical and underserved areas in veteran healthcare. PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and military sexual trauma affect veterans at rates significantly higher than the general population. Licensed clinical social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists deliver outpatient therapy across evidence-based modalities including cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure therapy — both VA-recommended treatments for PTSD. Psychologists perform diagnostic evaluations, neuropsychological testing, and specialized treatment planning. VA Community Care has expanded access to community-based behavioral health providers precisely because demand exceeds the VA’s internal capacity.

SECTION 5
Allied Health & Clinical Support
Allied health professionals and clinical support staff are the operational engine of every healthcare facility. Medical assistants and certified nursing assistants provide direct patient support — vital signs, specimen collection, patient positioning, and care coordination. Phlebotomists, laboratory technologists, and radiology technologists perform diagnostic testing that informs treatment decisions. This section also includes clinical specialists: dietitians managing therapeutic meal plans, audiologists treating the most commonly reported service-connected disability, optometrists, podiatrists, and dentists providing care covered under TRICARE and CHAMPVA benefit structures. Every role requires credentialing, licensure, or certification maintained within the government payer network.
