Substance Use Disorders are common and often urgent concerns among veterans, especially those dealing with co-occurring conditions such as PTSD, depression, chronic pain, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Veterans benefit from evidence-based care and compassionate support that addresses both addiction and its underlying causes.
As a SUD provider in the VA CCN, your role includes:
Help veterans reclaim their health and dignity by providing life-changing SUD care.
Offer outpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), or residential/inpatient services, as authorized.
Collaborate with primary care, mental health providers, social workers, and case managers.
Play a central role in VA’s response to substance-related and dual-diagnosis challenges.
Provide in-person or virtual care via telehealth, when clinically appropriate and authorized.
Use treatments supported by VA guidelines, including CBT, DBT, contingency management, and MAT.
Yes. Providers who are appropriately licensed and authorized to prescribe MAT medications can deliver these services when included in the veteran’s approved care plan.
Yes. The VA authorizes residential care for SUD if it is clinically necessary and approved by the veteran’s care coordinator.
Yes. VA supports the integration of peer support specialists when supervised appropriately and aligned with recovery-based treatment plans.
Yes. Telehealth is supported for many SUD services, including counseling and medication management, when clinically appropriate and pre-authorized by the VA.
Licensed Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Provider can begin the enrollment process through Optum (Regions 1–3) or TriWest (Regions 4–5). Veterans Desk provides education. The VA’s administrators handle enrollment.
