Why Substance Abuse PHPs Matter to Veterans

About This Specialty

Veterans often face unique challenges that contribute to substance use disorders, including PTSD, depression, chronic pain, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Many benefit from the structure and daily support of a PHP, which serves as a transitional level of care between inpatient treatment and traditional outpatient therapy. These programs play a critical role in managing withdrawal symptoms, building coping strategies, preventing relapse, and supporting long-term reintegration into civilian life.

As a substance abuse PHP provider, your role in the VA CCN includes:
  • Delivering evidence-based care, including group therapy, individual counseling, and relapse prevention
  • Offering medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using Suboxone, Vivitrol, or similar medications
  •  Providing dual-diagnosis care for veterans with co-occurring mental health conditions
  •  Coordinating with VA case managers, social workers, and primary care teams
  • Supporting each veteran’s recovery goals with a structured, compassionate approach
