VA Telehealth: How to Access Healthcare from Home

You do not always need to drive to the VA to see your doctor. VA telehealth services let you connect with your VA healthcare team through video, phone, and secure messaging from your home, your workplace, or anywhere you have internet access. For rural veterans who live hours from the nearest VA facility, for veterans with mobility limitations, for working veterans who cannot take a full day off for a VA appointment, and for anyone who prefers the convenience of virtual care, VA telehealth has transformed how veterans access healthcare.

VA Video Connect (VVC)

VA Video Connect is the VA’s primary telehealth platform for live video appointments with your healthcare team. VVC works on smartphones, tablets, and computers with a camera and microphone. You do not need to install special software. Your VA care team schedules a VVC appointment just like an in-person appointment, sends you a link by email or text, and you join the video call at the scheduled time. VVC appointments cover a wide range of services including primary care visits, mental health therapy sessions, medication management, specialty care consultations, nutrition counseling, social work services, and post-surgical follow-up. The quality of care delivered through VVC is the same as in-person care. Your provider can review your symptoms, discuss your treatment plan, adjust medications, order lab work, and make referrals during a video visit.

My HealtheVet: Your VA Patient Portal

My HealtheVet (myhealth.va.gov) is the VA’s patient portal that gives you 24/7 access to your VA healthcare information. Through the portal, you can send secure messages to your care team (and receive responses typically within one to three business days), request prescription refills and track prescription shipments, view your lab results, radiology reports, and clinical notes, schedule and manage appointments at participating facilities, download your complete VA medical records, and access health education resources and self-management tools. Secure messaging through My HealtheVet is one of the most underused and most valuable VA healthcare tools. Instead of calling the VA, waiting on hold, and leaving a message, you can send a written message to your care team that gets routed to the right person and documented in your medical record. Many veterans find that secure messaging resolves their healthcare questions faster and more reliably than phone calls.

VA Health Chat

VA Health Chat is a newer service that provides real-time chat with VA healthcare staff for quick questions and triage. Available through the VA Health Chat app or website, this service connects you with a VA staff member who can answer general health questions, help you determine whether you need an appointment, provide guidance on medication questions, and connect you with the right VA resource for your needs. Health Chat is not a substitute for a medical appointment, but it fills the gap between secure messaging (which is not real-time) and a phone call (which often involves long hold times).

Telehealth for Mental Health

Mental health is one of the strongest use cases for VA telehealth. Many veterans who are uncomfortable visiting a VA facility for mental health care find telehealth more accessible. You can attend therapy sessions from a private room in your home, which can reduce the stigma and logistical barriers that prevent many veterans from seeking help. The VA provides evidence-based mental health treatments through telehealth including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy, medication management for depression and anxiety, couples and family counseling, substance use disorder treatment, and peer support services. Research shows that mental health treatment delivered through telehealth is as effective as in-person treatment for most conditions. If you have been avoiding mental health care because of travel distance, scheduling challenges, or discomfort with in-person visits, telehealth removes those barriers.

Telehealth for Rural Veterans

Rural veterans often face the greatest barriers to VA healthcare access. Driving two or three hours each way for a 30-minute appointment is not sustainable for regular care. VA telehealth was designed in large part to solve this problem. In addition to home-based telehealth through VVC, the VA partners with community organizations to provide telehealth access points in rural areas. VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) offer telehealth rooms where rural veterans can connect with specialists at the main VA medical center. Some VA facilities have partnered with community centers, libraries, and Walmart stores to provide dedicated telehealth spaces with the equipment and privacy needed for a video appointment.

Getting Started with VA Telehealth

To use VA telehealth services, you need to be enrolled in VA healthcare. Register for My HealtheVet at myhealth.va.gov and upgrade to a Premium account (you can do this online, by phone, or at your VA facility). Download the VA Video Connect app on your smartphone or tablet. Ask your VA care team during your next appointment whether any of your future visits can be conducted through telehealth. If you need help setting up the technology, the VA has telehealth technical support available at 1-866-651-3180. Many VA facilities also offer in-person assistance for veterans who need help getting started with telehealth tools.

When You Still Need to Go In Person

Telehealth is powerful but it does not replace all in-person care. Physical examinations, lab draws, imaging studies, vaccinations, procedures, and conditions that require hands-on evaluation still require in-person visits. Your VA care team will determine which appointments can be conducted through telehealth and which require an in-person visit. The goal is to use telehealth for the visits where it works well so that your in-person visits are reserved for the care that truly requires them. This approach reduces your travel burden, saves time, and ensures you receive the right type of care in the right setting.

HEALTHCARE WITHOUT THE DRIVE

VA telehealth is not a lesser version of VA healthcare. It is VA healthcare delivered in a way that works for your life. If you have been skipping appointments because of distance, scheduling, or discomfort, telehealth removes those barriers. Register for My HealtheVet. Download VA Video Connect. Ask your care team about telehealth at your next visit. Your healthcare should be accessible, not an obstacle course.
